Evergreen Games 2024 Announcement

Evergreen Games Banner

If the name ‘Evergreen Games’ rings a bell, you are not wrong! This annual one day convention was established to commemorate the life of a dear friend and gamer, Simon “Evergreen” Pearce, who enjoyed and gave so much to the hobby, before being taken from all of us far too soon. All proceeds from Evergreen Games go to the Cure Brain Cancer charity, to help in the fight against the cancer that took him. Evergreen Games was paused during pandemic and is back now with the support of Melbourne Meeples.

So mark your calendars for Saturday May 4! Check next month’s Meeple Monthly for more details on how you can join us to support this worthy cause.

Announcing Board to Death

We’re partnering with our friends at True North to bring you a new event in the Melbourne Meeples calendar, namely Board to Death.

The Board to Death logo sits above artwork of a zombie in a meeple shirt passing a Calico token to the viewer as a red demon holds it's head in it's hands and the Grim Reaper studies his board.

The box from Calico sits on the table as well as some beer and pretzels

Board to Death runs every third Saturday of the month at True North in Coburg (just near the Coburg station and the number 19 tram) starting again on Feb 17th 2024 .

True North is a fantastic cafe with a chilled out vibe and some great retro decor. They serve meals with a rock and roll vibe (and most of them are puns related to 80s and 90s bands and songs). They’re open from the crack of dawn until the dead of night (1am!).

Unlike Audacious, Board to Death runs during the evenings, currently from 7pm until late.

Featuring all the great modern board games you’ve come to know and love from a Melbourne Meeples event, with the chill vibe of True North and a great variety of drink options and some food to die for.

While we’re aware that some may be disappointed that Audacious is no longer running, we hope that you’ll join us at Board to Death as a new Saturday tradition.

Find out all the gory details on the Board to Death page.

What’s Happening in 2024

There’s a lot of exciting meeple things planned for 2024, and we’re getting started straight away.

Board in the West is the first event on the meeple calendar with the January event starting 6pm, Friday January 5th. Also Board in the East and Games After Dark are not missing a beat and are scheduled as normal in January (BitE Friday 12th and Games After Dark Thursday 18th).

NSEG will return to the Croxton on Sunday February 11th.

Dates for Devonshire Society are still being organised. We will communicate the details when they are finalised.

Unfortunately Audacious Games will not continue in 2024. We’re looking into the possibility of starting some new events in 2024, and will communicate the details when they are finalised.

Our next major event is OzBunnyCon over the Easter weekend, Friday 29th March – Monday 1st April. Tickets will go on sale in January – we’ll let you know more soon.

Members will hear first and will get first access to purchase tickets at the special member discounted price!

Watch this space for announcements about OzBunnyCon and all the exciting Meeple events planned for 2024!

2023 – Meeple Year In Review

Hi Meeples!

It was an exciting, almost epic 2023 for our team here at Melbourne Meeples, and for our amazing community of members and supporters. We have more members than we’ve ever had, and hold more events in more areas of the city than ever before too – building on our mission to make board gaming accessible to as many people as possible across our great city.

People take in the games and accessories at the Melbourne Board Game Market 2023

In May the Melbourne Board Game Market brought over 600 people together with a host of local tabletop creatives, as well possibly the largest board game flea market Melbourne has ever seen. On the night before, PAX we brought board gaming to Fed Square, hiding just under cover on a drizzly night and converting many brand new gamers in the process!

People play at MeepleCon 2023

Now, waking from a packed MeepleCon, with more events, volunteers, contests (and raffle prizes!) than ever before and our biggest ever library – it feels important to add a bit of humility. We have an amazing, hard working team it’s true, but all of this is only possible because of you.

You meeps – our supporters, and especially our members – are the magic that makes our community special and keeps the magic alive. When new gamers come to our events – whether MeepleCon or OzBunnyCon, or NSEG, Board in the West, Board in the East, Games after Dark, the Devonshire Society, or Audacious Games – it’s the joy of sitting around a table playing a great game that brings them back, and it’s the other people at the table that make that experience magical. That’s you meeps. To our members – you make such a massive difference in ensuring we can continue doing what we do, and so often you take that next step from being a member to helping run our events and in doing so making board gaming more accessible to more great people like you. Thank you for being awesome, have a fantastic holiday season, and be assured – we have an even better 2024 to look forward to.

All the best,

Chris Ingold

New Boardgames added to the Library

We were lucky to have two Melbourne Meeples committee members attend Spiel Essen this year, and grab some hot new games to add to the Meeples Library, just in time for MeepleCon!

Our members were surveyed on what boardgames they thought should be added to the library, and we’ve been able to secure some of their most requested games!

  • Apiary is a worker placement game for 1-5 players set in a far-distant future where humans no longer inhabit Earth. Over the span of untold generations, one species of the humble honeybee evolved to fill that void. Players explore planets, gather resources, develop technologies, and create carvings to demonstrate your faction’s strengths over one year’s Flow. 7.7 BGG Rating
  • Among Cultists is a social deduction thriller where you become a member of M, the secret society. Try to prevent the arrival of an evil being at your university… but beware: vicious cultists are already among us! 8.1 BGG Rating
  • Earth is an open world engine builder for 1 to 5 players with simple rules but tons of strategic possibilities. With its encyclopedic nature and the enormous number of unique cards and combinations, every single game will allow you to discover new synergies and connections, just as our vast and fascinating world allows us to do! 7.8 BGG Rating
  • Evacuation life on our planet is being burned away thanks to increasingly intense sunlight, so everyone is trying to move all the people and factories in their territories from the “old” planet to a new one — and they have only four rounds in which to do so.  7.8 BGG Rating
  • Evenfall is a card-driven, engine-building game with both novel and familiar mechanisms for 1 to 4 players. Manage your resources, execute your actions in an efficient order, and discover card and action synergies that generate victory points. 8.1 BGG Rating
  • Kutná Hora: The City of Silver is a historical city-building Eurogame for 2-4 players that features a real-life supply and demand experience in which every action you take has an impact on the game’s dynamic economic systems. 7.9 BGG Rating
  • Nucleum is a heavy euro board game in which players take role of industrialists trying to succeed during the economic and technological boom of 19th-century Saxony, fueled by the invention and spread of the Nucleum (a nuclear reactor). 8.3 BGG Rating
  • Satori is is a Japanese Buddhism term for awakening and refers to a full and deep experience of enlightenment. In Satori, players compete to advance on the spiritual path. For this end, you’ll build new temples for the votaries to pray, get the wisest monks and contribute to build up the great pagoda to turn Koyasan in the heart of the zen Buddhism. 8.0 BGG Rating
  • Sky Team is a co-operative game, exclusively for two players, in which you play a pilot and co-pilot at the controls of an airliner. Your goal is to work together as a team to land your airplane in different airports around the world. 8.2 BGG Rating
